Card counting for beginners: it really is just +1 and -1

Search for card counting for dummies and you'll find two kinds of answers: the ones that make it sound like a savant superpower, and the ones that make it sound like a scam. Both are wrong. Card counting is a real, legal, learnable skill, and the entire mental load is smaller than keeping score in a darts game. You track one number. You adjust it by +1, 0, or -1 as each card appears. When the small cards are still buried, the shoe favors the house. Counting is just tracking that drift.

The system most people learn โ€” and the one most professionals actually use โ€” is called Hi-Lo. Every card in the deck carries one of three tags:

  • 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 โ€” the low cards โ€” count +1 when dealt. Their leaving is good for you.
  • 7, 8, 9 โ€” the middle cards โ€” count 0. Ignore them completely.
  • 10, jack, queen, king, ace โ€” the high cards โ€” count -1. Their leaving is bad for you.

Why such a simple system works

You start every fresh shoe at zero and keep a single running total as cards appear. A high positive running count means the felt has soaked up small cards, so the remaining shoe leans toward tens and aces โ€” bet more. Negative or near zero, bet the minimum. There's one refinement: divide the running count by the number of decks left to get the true count, because +6 with five decks remaining is lukewarm while +6 with one deck remaining is a green light. That division is the hardest math in the entire discipline.

Hi-Lo isn't a beginner's simplification of some real, harder system โ€” it basically is the real system. Edward Thorp proved blackjack beatable and published Beat the Dealer in 1962, and the following year an engineer named Harvey Dubner presented the Hi-Lo point count at a computer conference in Las Vegas, at a session Thorp himself moderated. Refined by IBM programmer Julian Braun's simulations and folded into the 1966 edition of Thorp's book, it has stayed the standard for sixty years because the fancier counts buy tiny accuracy gains at a huge cost in errors. Simple and correct beats clever and fumbled.

One caveat belongs in every honest beginner's guide: the edge this buys is real but small โ€” roughly half a percent to a percent and a half over the house with good conditions and a proper bet spread. Counting is proof that math beats the felt, not a money printer. That's exactly why it makes such a good skill to train: the interesting part is the craft.

The learning curve, honestly

Learning card counting has a genuinely encouraging shape: the concept takes minutes and the skill takes practice, with visible progress the whole way. Most people memorize the three tags in a day. Holding an accurate count through a full deck cleanly takes a couple of weeks of short daily drills. Real table readiness โ€” counting at dealt speed, converting to the true count, and playing perfect basic strategy at the same time, all while looking bored โ€” usually takes one to two months of consistent practice.

The classic milestone along the way is the deck countdown: count through a full 52-card deck and finish at exactly zero, since the tags of a complete deck cancel out. Trainers commonly set the bar at under 30 seconds without errors. Your first attempt will probably take two minutes and land on the wrong number. That's normal. The mistakes every beginner makes

Almost everyone who stalls while trying to learn card counting stalls on the same few habits. Knowing them in advance saves weeks:

  • Adding every card one at a time. A ten next to a five is zero โ€” cancel the pair and move on. Counters read the table in cancelling pairs and clumps, not card by card; re-adding the whole layout is the number one speed killer.
  • Ignoring the true count. A running count means nothing by itself in a multi-deck game. Beginners who skip the divide-by-decks-remaining step end up betting big into shoes that barely favor them.
  • Counting only your own cards. Every card that hits the felt is information โ€” other players' hands and the dealer's included. Train on the whole table from the start.
  • Practicing only in silence. A count you can hold only in a quiet room isn't a skill yet. Casinos are loud on purpose.
  • Chasing exotic systems too early. Multi-level counts and side counts exist, but a flawless Hi-Lo beats a sloppy anything-else. Master one number first.

The myths: Rain Man and the math brain

Rain Man taught two generations that counting means memorizing every card out of a six-deck shoe. No counter on earth does that, and none ever has. You never know which cards are gone โ€” you know one number that summarizes whether the remainder leans high or low. The memory requirement is a single integer, updated a few hundred times an hour.

The math brain myth dies the same way. There is no multiplication, no probability theory, no formulas at the table. The arithmetic is add one, subtract one, and occasionally divide a small number by another small number and round. Children can do the core operation. What separates a counter from a spectator isn't intelligence โ€” it's the automaticity that comes from drilling, the same way touch typists aren't smarter than hunt-and-peckers, just more practiced.
