How to count cards in blackjack
Card counting is a legal, skill-based technique that tracks the ratio of high to low cards left in the shoe so you know when the odds tip in your favor. This guide walks through the whole method with the Hi-Lo system — then you can drill it for free in the trainer.
What card counting actually is
A blackjack shoe rich in tens and aces favors the player: you hit more blackjacks (paid 3:2), your double downs land more often, and the dealer busts more. Counting doesn't mean memorizing every card — it's a single running number that estimates how favorable the remaining cards are. When that number is high, you bet more and occasionally change how you play; when it's low, you bet the minimum.
The five steps
Step 1 — Tag every card
Give each card a value. In Hi-Lo, low cards 2–6 are +1, the neutral 7–9 are 0, and high cards 10, J, Q, K and Ace are −1. High cards leaving the shoe is bad for you, so they push the count down.
Step 2 — Keep the running count
Start at 0 and add each card's tag as it appears. Practice cancelling pairs (a +1 and a −1 net to 0) and counting in smooth, even beats rather than re-adding the whole table each time.
Step 3 — Convert to the true count
The running count alone doesn't account for how many cards are left. Divide it by the decks remaining to get the true count — a +6 running count with 3 decks left is a true count of +2.
Step 4 — Size your bet to the count
When the true count is high the remaining shoe is rich in tens and aces, which favors the player, so you raise your bet. When it's low or negative you bet the table minimum. This bet spread is where a counter's edge actually comes from.
Step 5 — Deviate when the count says so
At certain true counts the best play departs from basic strategy. These index plays (the Illustrious 18 and Fab 4) are small but real — for example, you stand on 16 vs a dealer 10 once the true count reaches 0.
The Hi-Lo values
Hi-Lo is the best system to start with. Here are its tag values for every rank — the same table the counting trainer drills:

Running count vs. true count
The running count is the raw sum of tags. The true countis the running count divided by the decks remaining, and it's what you actually bet and deviate on. Estimating decks remaining from the discard tray is a skill of its own — the trainer checks both numbers at timed checkpoints so it becomes automatic.
Basic strategy comes first
Counting only pays off on top of perfect basic strategy— the mathematically correct hit, stand, double, split or surrender for every hand. If you're still unsure of any play, drill the decision trainer and keep the rules-accurate strategy charthandy until it's second nature.
Choosing a counting system
Hi-Lo is the most popular, but it isn't the only option. Each system trades simplicity for power:
- Hi-Lo — balanced, easiest, the standard starting point.
- KO (Knock-Out) — unbalanced, skips the true-count division.
- Hi-Opt I — balanced, higher playing accuracy.
- Omega II — advanced multi-level count, maximum power.
Is counting cards legal?
Yes — counting cards in your head is not cheating and is perfectly legal; you're just thinking. Casinos are private businesses and may ask strong players to leave, which is why counters practice discretion. This trainer is for learning and entertainment only and involves no real-money gambling.
