The Hi-Lo card counting system
Hi-Lo is the most popular card counting system and the best place to start. It is a balanced, single-level count: low cards are +1, high cards are −1, and the middle cards are neutral. Because it is balanced, a full deck counted from start to finish returns to exactly zero — which is what lets you convert the running count into a true count and bet accordingly.

Because it's balanced, a full deck counts to zero — divide the running count by the decks remaining to get the true count you bet and deviate on.

Who it's best for
Hi-Lo is best for beginners and the vast majority of players. Whatever system you choose, the edge only shows up on top of perfect basic strategy, so drill your decisions alongside the count.
