6:5 blackjack: what the payout really costs

There is a sign on a lot of blackjack tables that reads 'Blackjack pays 6 to 5.' It is small, it is polite, and it is the single most expensive sentence in the casino. Most players read it as a detail about payouts rather than a change to the game, which is precisely why it worked. Nothing else on the felt is different. Same cards, same dealer, same basic strategy chart in your pocket.

The cost is not a matter of opinion, and it is not a rounding error. Paying 6-to-5 on a natural instead of the traditional 3-to-2 adds 1.39 percentage points to the house edge. Against a game whose whole appeal is that the edge is measured in fractions of a percent, that is not a tweak. It is a different game wearing the same name.

What 1.39 percentage points actually means

The Wizard of Odds maintains a table of what each blackjack rule is worth, measured as a change to the house edge. Against its stated baseline — eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double on any first two cards, double after splitting, split to four hands — the line reading 'Blackjack pays 6-5' is worth minus 1.39%. That is an increment, not a standalone edge. It is what the rule adds to whatever the rest of the table's conditions already cost you.

Increments of that size are unusual. Most single rule changes in blackjack move the edge by a tenth or two of a percentage point. A dealer who hits soft 17 instead of standing costs 0.22 points. Removing double-after-split costs 0.14. The 6-to-5 payout is roughly six times the size of the largest of those, which is the part that gets lost when it is described as a payout adjustment rather than a rule change.

It is also worth knowing where the ceiling is, because 6-to-5 is not the worst version of this. The same table prices a blackjack paying 7-to-5 at 0.45 points and a blackjack paying even money at 2.27 points. The natural is the player's only structural advantage in blackjack — the one hand the dealer cannot tie by drawing to it — and shaving its payout is the cleanest lever a casino has.

Where the number comes from

The derivation is short enough to check yourself. A natural pays 1.5 units at 3-to-2 and 1.2 units at 6-to-5, so the player forfeits 0.3 units every time one lands. In a single-deck game the probability of being dealt a blackjack is 0.046492. Multiply: 0.3 x 0.046492 = 0.013948, or 1.3948%. That is the entire mechanism. No simulation, no assumptions about how you play the rest of the hand, because the payout change touches only the hands that are already over.

The Wizard works a full example with it. Normal downtown single-deck rules, he notes, produce a house edge of 0.1896%. Add the 6-to-5 payout and 1.3948% + 0.1896% = 1.5844%. Elsewhere he gives the same game a cleaner framing: 'Aside from the 6-5 rule the house edge would be 0.05%. However the 6-5 on blackjacks costs the player an additional 1.39%, for a total house edge of 1.44%.'

Read that last line twice. A single-deck game with a 0.05% house edge is very close to an even bet — the kind of thing casinos historically did not offer without a catch. The catch is the payout, and it multiplies the edge by roughly thirty. The single-deck sign on the table is real. So is the reason it is there.

Tripling a small number

Single deck is the dramatic case. The ordinary case is a six-deck shoe where the dealer hits soft 17, doubling after splits is allowed and you can resplit. The Wizard puts that game's house edge at 0.64% with a 3-to-2 payout. That is a normal, unremarkable Las Vegas blackjack game: not generous, not predatory, and comfortably one of the better bets on any casino floor.

Add the 6-to-5 payout to it and you land near 2%. Two caveats on that arithmetic, both mine rather than the source's. The 1.39-point figure is calibrated to an eight-deck baseline and I am applying it to a six-deck game, and blackjack frequency shifts slightly with deck count, so the sum is approximate — call it about 2%, not a number with decimals. Even so, the conclusion survives the imprecision: the rule more than triples the house edge of a perfectly ordinary blackjack table.

That ratio is the whole story. Almost nothing else a casino can do to a table game changes its cost by a factor of three while leaving the game visually identical. Switch a roulette wheel from single-zero to double-zero and you roughly double the edge, and at least the wheel looks different. Here the only tell is a line of paint on the layout.

The same thing in dollars

Percentages of an unstated base are easy to shrug off, so convert. Expected hourly cost is a three-term product: average bet x hands per hour x house edge. For hands per hour I am using 70, the figure the Wizard's house-edge comparison uses for blackjack. One honest caveat about that number: it appears there in a comp-rating table, where it is paired with a 0.75% realized house edge that deliberately bakes in player mistakes and bet selection. I am pairing it instead with basic-strategy edges, which isolates what the rule costs a player who is doing everything else right.

At a $25 average bet, seventy hands an hour, the arithmetic runs like this.

The difference is the whole point: the rule costs a $25 player about $24 an hour, more than the entire expected cost of the 3-to-2 game. And these are expectations, not outcomes. Blackjack under liberal Vegas Strip rules carries a standard deviation of 1.15 units per hand, so any single session will land far from these numbers in either direction. That is exactly why the change spread so easily — the extra cost is invisible inside normal swings, and it collects anyway.

  • 3-to-2, six decks, dealer hits soft 17: $25 x 70 x 0.0064 = $11.20 an hour.
  • 6-to-5, same table otherwise: $25 x 70 x 0.0203 = $35.53 an hour.
  • The rule alone: $25 x 70 x 0.0139 = $24.33 an hour.
  • At a $10 minimum table, the rule alone: $10 x 70 x 0.0139 = $9.73 an hour.

What stacks on top of it

The payout rarely arrives by itself. Every other condition on the table carries its own price, and the Wizard's rule table prices each one against that eight-deck, stand-on-soft-17 baseline. These are per-rule costs, not a menu of what any particular casino imposes — I can tell you what each rule is worth, not how common it currently is, because nobody publishes a reliable survey of that.

Note that these are not strictly additive with one another; several interact. But the direction is one-way, and the arithmetic of stacking them is unforgiving. A 6-to-5 table that also hits soft 17 and restricts doubling to 10 and 11 has moved a long way from where it started, and every step of the journey was printed on the felt in language most players skim.

Notice which of these is the easiest to check and which is the easiest to miss. The payout is printed on the layout in large type. Whether the dealer hits soft 17 is usually printed there too. The doubling and splitting restrictions often are not, and you find them by watching a few hands or asking the dealer, who will tell you plainly. Two minutes of looking covers every line above.

  • Dealer hits soft 17 instead of standing: 0.22 points.
  • No doubling after a split: 0.14 points.
  • No resplitting: 0.10 points.
  • Doubling restricted to 10 and 11 only: 0.18 points. Restricted to 9 through 11: 0.09 points.
  • No splitting aces: 0.18 points.
  • No doubling at all: 1.48 points.

How it took the Strip

The spread is documented, though the best data is a private survey rather than a regulator's filing. John Mehaffey of Vegas Advantage has counted Las Vegas blackjack tables for years. In an article dated October 25, 2022, he reported that the Strip carried 720 tables paying 3-to-2 in 2010, and that his September 2022 survey found 275 out of 855 — roughly 32%. Downtown held out longer: 3-to-2 was 73% of tables in 2010, peaked at 89% in 2011, and stood at 66% when he wrote. Market-wide, he put 3-to-2 at slightly over 50%. Those figures are nearly four years old now; treat them as the trajectory, not today's count.

What is current is the price of admission. Vegas Advantage's central Strip survey, updated May 18, 2026, reports that the minimum bet for a 3-to-2 game on the Strip is usually $25 or $50 even during slower hours, can be found as low as $15, and may be $100 when it is busy. That is the mechanism in one sentence. The good rules did not disappear; they moved up-market, and the tables a casual player naturally sits down at are the ones with the expensive payout.

The industry discussed this openly. At a UNLV panel on April 28, 2019, John Hemberger, then senior vice president of table game products at AGS, said he had seen $50 minimum games paying 6-to-5 and that 'to me that is chasing people off.' Another panelist, London Swinney, gave the other half of the explanation, conceding that he had misjudged how players would react: 'I was wrong. Not everyone who walks into the casino thinks like we do. They are there to be entertained.' He is describing, accurately, why the change stuck.

Table selection is the first skill, and it is free

Here is the uncomfortable comparison for anyone who has spent time learning to count. A competent card counter earns a fraction of a percent of edge, and pays for it with hundreds of hours of drilling, real bankroll risk, and the constant possibility of being asked to leave. Sitting at a 3-to-2 table instead of a 6-to-5 one is worth 1.39 percentage points, costs nothing, requires no practice, and takes about two seconds to check. No counting system in existence produces a return on effort remotely like that.

Which is not an argument against learning the game — it is an argument about order of operations. Basic strategy first, because a game you play by feel gives back more than any rule variation takes. Table conditions second, because they set the ceiling on everything else. Counting after that, if the shoe game and the penetration justify it. Skipping the first two and going straight to the third is how people end up counting perfectly at a table where the math was already lost.

So read the felt before you sit. Find the payout, check whether the dealer hits soft 17, look at what you are allowed to double and split. It takes one lap of the pit, and on the numbers above it is worth more per hour than most people's counting ever will be. The rest of this site exists to make the decisions after that one easier.
